What we stand for
Sustainability
We understand that sustainability is about maintaining, improving and adapting. Our sustainability targets are:
Sustainable environment – we aim to have a dedicated knowledge base on ideas, projects and successful examples of sustainability. We will host one or more workshops a year and have a dedicate work space where people can come together and build their ideas. Videos and other information sharing will be a priority.
Sustainable healthcare – There is no doubt the health care system in the United Kingdom is beyond broken under the weight of lots of things. There is a lot of talk about “doing things differently” but very little original thinking. We aim to bring together multiple professionals onto a dedicated rehabilitation site. Its not a new idea and its proven to work, but it is not available in this town or anywhere near. The most complex patients are the ones that slip through the gap. By working jointly with private practitioners and the NHS we aim to close these holes and cater for those who the system cant cope with.
Sustainable communities – using support groups, derelict buildings and ugly warehouses to host the enterprise we aim to show that industrial estates can be converted into thriving bio-diverse zones. There are examples where this has been done, but none in our area. We are aiming to provide a place for those who do not want to join a commercial gym to come together and train differently. No televisions, no fancy equipment, just stuff that helps you maximise your physical and mental strength.
Sustainable grants – Rehabilitation is expensive. Its is space dependent but low volume of clients means that rehabilitation centres charge a lot for their services. Starting a rehabilitation centre costs a fortune. We aim to be grant free in ten years and to pay back our grants. This will ensure that others trying to start an enterprise can access funds as we hope to.
Sustainable world – There are a phenomenal amount of projects going on around the world which could be used in other countries with some adaption. SERG will be aiming to gather these ideas into one knowledge pool or library and then get people talking to each other to adapt these ideas to suit their community. Even if it is only their own home, its worth the effort.
Enterprise
Enterprise – SERG is aiming not to employ lots of people but to create employment for lots of people. The ideas we generate in the environmental workshops, the rehabilitation, the paying back of grants, etc. can all create work for people to do. Discarding the old competition model, we aim to get a diverse range of people and professions working together in a joint space so they can provide low cost services to their community.
Rehabilitation
The core of our definition of rehabilitation is to maximise function. In people this can be psychological, physiological and sociological. In a way we want to make this more global by taking a large disused premises and rehabilitating it into something that gives something back to the community it is in. We would like to expand this to the environment as well. By working from an industrial estate which has a large number of disused warehouses we are hoping to rehabilitate our building and slowly change the whole estate to be an asset to the community by helping install low cost, low maintenance solutions to environmental problems while creating a space where people will want to work and be proud of.
We are hoping to obtain a start up grant but thought it better to start giving even if we cant afford registration yet (the usual start up fees and everything that follows). We need to raise £3000 to start up and secure legal services followed by £750 000 to buy and equip the premises.
